Description

Stand
This is a New Custom Made Cart Stand (machine is NOT part of the sale and for display purposes only). Hand crafted, can be easy assembled or disassembled. Made of durable 2.0 steel tubing – it can bare a load of more than 200 kg. Very durable and stable – T-bars are welded and bolted together with crossbars with 8mm bolts. Powder coated in the tone of “Studer Grey” (colour code RAL 7016)

Side panels and rest bar are made from exotic hardwood african padauk. It has deep redish-orange colour which becomes slightly darker with time.

Wheels are by France by leading manufacturer TENTE. The shelf for amplifiers can be removed – please see the pictures. The recorder is NOT part of the sale and for display purposes only.

Cabinet
High quality custom made Cabinet with four sides. Can be adjusted to specific requirements of the recorder.

Side panels and can be made from metal or wood. Stained plywood material used is Baltic Birch. Natural veneer material is plywood applied with natural veneer (wide variety of colors, textures and factures available). Solid wood includes a range of classic materials, such as European Oak and Sapelli Mahogany. Exotic solid wood includes more rare and specific features (note that African Padauk and Bubinga materials have deep redish-orange colour which becomes slightly darker with time). Meter Bridge

This 3U VU unit is suitable to any Studer Reel to Reel machine – or any other recorder – which comes without VU meters to enable control and monitor of recording and playback levels. Ensures calibrated and un-calibrated level control modes of recording and playback. VU meters can be switched between normal and “peak” modes with a simple push of a switch. In “peak” ballistics of VU meters are adjusted to show peak values of recording/playback.

The VU meter indicator circuitry is a modified replica of the Studer A810 (also A812, A816) including a switchable standard VU meter mode and a peak program meter (PPM) mode. In addition, there is a switch to increase the sensitivity by 10dB. -10 VU mode is also useful when calibrating the recorder with a test tape where tones are recorded at a level of -10 dB below nominal and you do not have external audio frequency VU meter.

Unit’s “0” value for VU meters is calibrated to “normal” Studer (studio standard) level – +4dB. “0” level can be adjusted to other values – if you want so.

All parts are top quality, schematics used are from top manufacturers. Operational Amplifiers are exchangeable – mounted in sockets. We use Texas Instruments INA137PA, DRV134PA.

In the input and output sections are additional RCA sockets. You can connect signal source which does not have XLR sockets.

STUDER A80-R

 

1. VU meter calibration.

– Set the RCA / XLR switch to XLR.
– Set the Peak / VU switch to VU.
– Deactivate the RECORD LEVEL-UNCAL (Front panel) switch.
– Switch on the INP (Front panel) switch.

– Set switch 0 VU / -10 VU to 0 VU.
– +4 dBu (1,223 Vrms) signal at XLR input INPUT.
– Use potentiometer 0 on the back of the VU to set the VU meter reading to 0.
– Carry out the adjustment for channel CH1 and CH2.

– Set the switch to 0 VU / – 10 VU to -10 VU.
– At -6 dBu (0.388 Vrms) signal to XLR input INPUT.
– Use potentiometer -10 on the back of the VU to set the VU meter reading to 0.
– Carry out the adjustment for channel CH1 and CH2.

2. RCA input calibration.

– Remove the cover by unscrewing the six screws (there is a washer under the upper left screw, please do not lose it).
– Set the RCA / XLR switch to RCA.
– Set the Peak / VU switch to VU.
– Deactivate the RECORD LEVEL-UNCAL (Front panel) switch.
– Switch on the INP (Front panel) switch.

– Set switch 0 VU / -10 VU to 0 VU.
– Supply a signal of -10 dBV (0.316 Vrms) to the RCA input INPUT.
– Use the potentiometer inside the unit to set the VU meter reading to 0.
– Carry out the adjustment for channel CH1 (L) and CH2 (R).

    I had a custom cabinet with meter bridge built for my Studer A81R machine (the B-wind version of the A80RC). The cabinet looks beautiful and is easier to move around than my Studer cabinets due to being lighter in weight than the factory cabinet without compromising quality, strength, or rigidity. The VU meter bridge is an excellent replacement for the original Studer meter bridge as it replicates the functionality, and adds some features to better integrate with line-level use without introducing the common Studer VU meter bridge issues such as noisy pots and bad capacitors compromising audio quality in the signal path. I plan to purchase a second unit for an A80RC I own that does not currently have a meter bridge.
